When the new iPhones were announced, the first thing that caught my attention was the supposed improvement in low-light photography. After testing the last three generations of iPhones, where low-light photos didn’t come close to Android’s flagship counterparts from Google, Samsung or Huawei, I wanted to try it out. This is the first thing I tested and I was impressed with the image quality jump when shooting in low light. Finally, the new iPhones face tough competition in low-light photography, a category Apple has apparently abandoned over the past three generations.

Apple’s annual iPhone refresh comes in the form of iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max. These three phones were some of the most leaked devices this year, and nothing that was already known was announced at an Apple hardware event last month.

Yes, prices above 1 lakh rupees are here to stay, and I don’t think this trend is going to fade away any time soon – Apple’s market share in India could be for a long time. The iPhone 11 Pro series hides significant enhancements under the hood, such as the mighty Apple A13 Bionic chipset, a much larger battery, and a triple rear camera setup with features like Night Mode and the all-new iOS 13 operating system, the standard upgrade you expect from Apple. So let’s jump straight to the camera section to start this review.

Indeed, the biggest change to the new iPhone 11 Pro Max is the triple rear camera on the back. While all three cameras remain at 12MP, an additional ultra-wide angle lens has been added to the wide-angle and telephoto lenses. It had to happen because Android smartphones had already democratized the ultra wide-angle lens.

Below is a brief overview of the main features of the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s three rear cameras. The optional ultra wide-angle camera offers a 120-degree field of view, and your fingers will easily appear in the picture. You have to be very careful when you hold the phone.

In terms of sensor size, the wide-angle camera has the largest 1 / 2.55-inch sensor, while the telephoto and ultra-wide-angle camera have a 1 / 3.6-inch type sensor. The front camera is a 12MP module with f / 2.2 aperture.

I took my iPhone 11 Pro Max, Google Pixel 3XL and Huawei P30 Pro for a photographic night in South Mumbai. Pixel 3XL (review) and Huawei P30 Pro (review) performed well in low light conditions. The iPhone XS Max (review) did not even match the Pixel 3XL. The iPhone 11 Pro Max has improved significantly on that front. For several years now, the iPhone has taken a back seat when it comes to low-light photography. This time everything was fixed. You will not regret taking your iPhone 11 Pro Max to your evening out.

Pictures taken in low light will immediately activate Night Mode, shown as a yellow circular icon next to the flash icon. It is activated based on the brightness of the light around you – you cannot manually activate it. However, you can turn it off if you don’t want to – but I doubt if anyone will. The night mode on the iPhone 11 Pro series locks the exposure and captures everything in the scene in such a way that every movement in the scene is recorded as a blur. This was not the case with Huawei and Pixel phones, which use artificial intelligence to get rid of blurry parts for a well-lit, detailed scene. Apple says it does this as well, but I haven’t seen it in my sample photos. In addition, the phone does not tolerate hand shake as much as other phones.

One of the strengths of the iPhone is that evening and night photos appear as if they were taken in low light. Phones like the Pixel and P30 Pro tend to turn night into day, which isn’t usually the photographer’s goal. On the other hand, I love how low-light photos work. You can see them gradually take shape and become brighter as the low light progresses. It’s much better than Pixel’s Freeze Picture and Timer.

Overall image quality in low light was pleasant. The images look amazing on the phone and that is enough for most iPhone users. If you are a photography enthusiast and want to play around with your photos in a large screen monitor, you will notice some noise when working with 100 percent crop.

The ultra wide-angle mode on the iPhone 11 Pro Max has an f / 2.4 aperture which is almost three stops darker than the f / 1.8 of the wide-angle camera. It does not give a pleasant result in low light mode. Since there is no night mode function in the ultra wide angle camera, the ultra wide angle night shots are full of noise and just come out very dark. In daylight, the ultra wide-angle mode is great for taking great photos, especially when it comes to architecture. Just don’t try to take a group photo with your friends by filling the frame with your ultra wide-angle camera – if you do, make sure all your shots are centered, though even that won’t help given the amount of distortion.

The low-light performance of the iPhone 11 Pro Max is in most cases comparable to that of the Pixel 3XL. Huawei P30 Pro produces strange colors in AI mode, but produces excellent images with AI mode off. It is difficult to decide which of the three is best for low light photography as all three provide a nice effect when viewed on a smartphone display. Yes, noise does penetrate, but it cannot be avoided. One area where the Pixel 3 XL excels is night selfies and portrait photos. The computational magic offered by the Pixel 3 XL is second to none. The Huawei P30 Pro was unable to take a portrait photo despite selecting this mode, although its AI mode does a good job of brightening up dark scenes when taking selfies. For comparison, the iPhone 11 Pro Max fared poorly for both low-light and portrait selfies. It just lacks clarity and clarity when it comes to low-light selfies – and no, Night Mode doesn’t work on the front camera. When it comes to low-light selfies, the crown clearly belongs to the Pixel 3 XL.

Pictures taken in daylight are comforting. Really nothing to complain about. All three lenses – wide-angle, telephoto, and ultra-wide – work quite well. The dynamic range of the iPhone 11 Pro Max cameras is impressive. It optimally emphasizes light and dark areas for a higher dynamic range. Even shooting against the light gives a great effect. Focusing is quick thanks to the new sensor with 100% focusing pixels.

Iphone 14 Pro Max Review: Worth The Fancy Upgrade

There is an option “Take a picture outside the frame” in the camera settings. This mode is turned off by default, but it basically captures some of the top / bottom and sides of the frame that you may have captured. This allows you to recompose your shot in post-processing if you are framing a critical part of the shot or if the horizon is not horizontal. This is activated by going to

Or choose different sizes and orientations of frames. Under normal circumstances, you can correct the horizon in cropping mode, but this also crops the image. With Off-Frame Photo mode on, no cropping is required as you are literally selecting a frame from a much larger canvas. This mode works especially well for street photography, where you can sometimes get lost in the frame and change the composition of that moment in the post. This
